7.1. - NATO hesitancy and the Nuclear Deterrent -- arms deals.

Why Won’t NATO countries attack Russia?

During the Arms Race of the Cold War, as discussed previously, Both the Soviets (Russians) and NATO countries started stockpiling (making a lot of) nuclear bombs.

Nuclear bombs are the most destructive and powerful weapons on the planet. They have the power to destroy entire cities in seconds. They have tragically been used twice on humans, both during World War II, when The United States of America dropped them on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima killing a combined 130 to 230 thousand people, which would be the equivalent (same) as everyone in Hamilton dying in a few seconds.

(Warning: THIS MIGHT BE DIFFICULT TO WATCH!)

But since they were in an arms race and wanted to make bigger and better bombs, they made even more powerful ones than these. The biggest ever made was the Tsar (or Tzar) Bomba which was made by the Soviet Union and was 3,800 times stronger than the ones dropped on Japan.

[/url]Many of these weapons have been tested on unpopulated (which means areas without people living on them, though people were still affected) parts of the world, including Pacific islands. This included the Bikini atoll, which landed the name of the atoll  in Newspapers and caused fashion designers to name the swimwear bikini after them.

These areas still have higher radiation levels, which means it’s not safe to be around them for long periods of time. Radiation exposure can lead to death, cancer, and other diseases.

    What is the Nuclear Deterrent?

Therefore, The Soviets, the Americans, and many other world powers now had very strong weapons which can destroy entire countries within seconds. This meant that both sides know if they attack each other, they risk nuclear war and “mutually assured destruction” which means an understanding that if one side launches nuclear bombs, the other side will too, and both sides will die.

So this has created something called “the nuclear deterrent” a deterrent is something which keeps someone from doing something. So, world leaders are deterred from going to war against other countries with nuclear weapons because they know that they risk both sides using nuclear weapons and ending the world.

What have other countries done? ,

This means that World Wars like we know them are likely a thing of the past. But it also means that other countries have to be careful about how they help countries like Ukraine because they can’t send in troops, or it would be seen as a threat against Russia. So they have to send in aid (money, weapons, food, medicine, etc) instead.
